Washington State requires all owners, managers and servers who work in establishments that serve alcohol for on-site consumption to have a Mandatory Alcohol Server Training (MAST) Permit. In order to receive the permit they must complete a training course of no less than 3 hours in length and then pass an exam at the end of the course.
If the person taking the course is 21 or older, the MAST Permit they receive is called a CLASS 12 Mixologist Permit. This permit allows them to perform any duties associated with the sale or service of alcohol, including bartending and managing.
Minors (18-20 years old) taking this course will receive a CLASS 13 Servers Permit which allows them to work in a restaurant atmosphere where minors are allowed. While their duties are somewhat restricted, they can take orders from and deliver drinks to patrons in the family dining area.
